The Cows
2025's garlic is sold out, but you can still get gift certificates!
The Cows
In March 2020, right before covid hit, two of us (Sylvester & Ivan) came to SLF as babies.
We were the best buddies you've ever met.
Ivan died in 2025, and Sylvester was as inconsolable as the humans. So the humans got three calves to try to fill the void with cuteness and hijinks. Sylvester's coming around, and so are the humans.
We cows play an important role: chill out and eat grass and help make compost's raw materials.
By the way. Technically, cows are girls. So Beatrix is a cow.
The rest of us are steer, but most people don't know what that is (it means we're neutered bulls), and calling us cattle makes us sound like we live in Texas, which we don't. So you can just call us all cows. We don't get too bothered about gender 'round here.
My mom was a Dutch Belted and my dad a Jersey, so I have red highlights when the light catches just right. I'm really sweet but a bit of a wild man. I love to horse around with Ivan. I'm kind of scared of apples and other fruit, and I'm a really fast runner.
Guess what! I'm the baby-est baby here, and I am cute and snuggly. I'm half Hereford, half Holstein, so I'm going to be huge. But I plan to stay snuggly and sweet even when I get big.
Oh. And can you bring me some milk?
I love milk.
Love love love it.
Excuse me. Could you scratch my head? I can be a little shy, but will love you in exchange for some scratches.
I love hanging out with Beatrix and Russell and my coat is much softer than theirs. I'm a month older than Russell, and I'm half Jersey and half Angus. And guess what. My mom's name is Jill, and she is Ivan's sister.
Girl power! Beatrix is a fancy name of a woman who lived in England and wrote about rabbits named Peter. I don't know why that's my name. I should have been named Miss Bossy Pants or She-of-the-very-loud-moo.
I'm half Jersey, half Angus, and a couple months older than the other calves. I make sure they never forget.
